The UK is losing its natural landscape just as rapidly as other places such as Brazil and the devastating impact of humans on their rainforests- what with HS2 alone bulldozing and damaging over 108 ancient woodlands, as well as nature reserves and people’s own homes, some newly built within the last few years and others having stood for over 400 years. Our ancient woodland and woods, forests and reserves, are our rainforests. They are the ecosystems keeping our island alive with wildlife. Just because something isn’t endangered, doesn’t mean we should throw it out of its habitat- this will just contribute to making its species endangered. Recently I cant help thinking that if we had orangutans or other primates living in UK woodlands, would people care more about protecting them? Our government seems to believe that in the name of ‘progress’ we need to obliterate our natural landscape, tear down the small pockets of nature which we reside nearby and instead erect concrete and chaos. We cannot survive without nature. One oak tree alone supports over 284 species of insect. These pollinate plants, they feed birds and mammals, which in turn feed other mammals and species. There are whole chains and webs we are destroying to quicken the pace of our lives and become even more ‘productive.’ This is a downhill slope however, and the pace will quicken, the wheels will keep turning and the brakes will not work. Humanity will have caused its own downfall in the name of progress and productivity, humans will grind to a halt.
